Being a Witch – Anxiety & Manifestation

Happy Thursday witches! I’ve finally sat down and worked through all my thoughts on this subject. If you follow Magickal Mavens on instagram, you may have seen my post about this Taurus New Moon helping me climb out of this dark cloud I’ve been under the last few months. While it’s likely I’ve just been dealing with some unexpected seasonal depression, it kicked my anxiety into high gear.
While I haven’t been diagnosed with any formal anxiety disorder, it’s something I’ve been dealing with since I was a pre-teen. I was always in a constant state of “what if”, preferring to lock myself away from people and read than interact with my peers. However anxious I was though, I always trusted my intuition about people and situations.
I will always remember the day I didn’t listen to her. Her voice whispered to me as I made plans. She caught herself in my mother’s voice as she asked me when I would be home. She raised the hair on the back of my neck and arms. She frantically dug a pit in my stomach so deep it felt as if it had no bottom. She begged and pleaded with me to run. And yet, I did not move. And in that split second of indecision, choosing to ignore her, she silenced her voice.
It has been a struggle ever since to convince her to speak louder than a soft whisper. I broke our bond and she could no longer trust herself to keep me safe if I was unwilling to heed her words.
This constant state of questioning myself and the intentions of those around me is exhausting. Some days are better than others, but up to the Taurus new moon, my anxiety has been at an all time high.
Walking this path requires us to embrace ourselves fully and to trust Her without question.
In order to truly manifest you must feel and trust what you want and need to deeply within your body that your energy is clearly channeled. There must be no doubt in your mind in what you want. Anxiety makes that feeling, a total bitch to get too. Intuition hides in Anxiety’s shadow, afraid to push her aside. Afraid to bring you back to that roaring fire inside you that always lit your path.
I have been slowly attempting to reconnect with Intuition. It is something I work on little by little every day. Relearning to trust myself and Her takes effort every day. It’s acknowledging the wavelength you find yourself on, encouraging and responding to those moments the moment they appear. It’s showing yourself grace and care on your bad days, and trusting that they will be over by morning.
I wanted to share with you a few of the things I have been implementing into my lifestyle that have helped me manage my anxiety and foster trust in myself. Learning to trust myself impacts every part of my life, and in particular my magick.
Being a Witch - Anxiety and Manifestation

Silence, Solitude, & Space –

This can be a difficult one, but for me it is usually the most important. It is imperative that for your own mental health and wellness that you find a few moments every day to care for yourself. How can you continue to care for those around you when you have literally nothing else to give? Caring for yourself is caring for your loved ones. You don’t do anyone any good by running yourself ragged.
Now, for those of you that are parents – I know this is practically an impossibility some days. So I challenge you to plan at least one day a MONTH to get some real peace and quiet. Trade off with your partner so that you can each have your moment to rest and reset. Your spirit will thank you.

Decisions. Decisions. Decisions.

For me, this was largely about what do I waste energy worrying about each day. I’ve worked to pair down my closet, my skin care, my makeup routine, even meal prepping. Anything I can think of that I can work to have a solid foundation in. If I can do it half-asleep, or on auto pilot and I look put together and well fed, I am a fan of. The less time and energy I put into these things, the more I can put towards the things I am passionate about.

Prioritizing & Planning

Keeping a rough daily/weekly schedule has helped my anxiety so much. Now, this is largely a control thing but it has helped me ensure I meet all of my “musts” each week. Working out, meal planning, content for MM, everything important to me. Anything outside of those musts is required to fit around those, and if it doesn’t – I say no. My bullet journal is becoming my greatest asset.

Purging your internal dialogue

You must have a space to dump your thoughts, unfiltered and unashamed of them. It is something I am still working on, but it has helped me so much in relearning to trust my initial thoughts and feelings regarding something. Whether this be in therapy, a journal, whatever makes sense for you – be sure to do it. First thing in the morning with your coffee, just after the kids have gone to bed and all is quiet.
These are still a work in progress for me. I’m sure they will never be perfect as we all grow, but they are the few things I am committing myself too. I may let my emotions fuel my magick, but I won’t let them control me.
I hope you found these helpful. If you implement any of these into your life I would love to hear how.

Everyday Witchcraft – Coloring Books

For those of us that may be doing one, all, or none of the following:
A) hiding our craft,
b) have a small altar space,
c) have a space where fresh flowers or other plants are not a feasible option,
d) feel drawn to elements or geography that is not reasonably within reach regularly or
e) just because you can!
How have I not touched on the magickalness and potential of coloring books in your craft.
Pinterest - EW - Coloring Books
That’s right. Coloring books.
I love using coloring books in my craft. I pop finished pages or one’s I want to use for specific purpose right along side tarot readings or other messages in my grimoire. Working with them in an intentional, meditative practice gives them so much focused power.
The imagery is endless. While I used to be an alright doodler, I have been so out of touch with my artistic self that I have been genuinely afraid of working in my grimoire or just… doing witchwork in general. I got caught up in this idea of what it was “supposed to look like”, based on the beautiful works from others that I follow. Coloring books take that fear right out of me. For those of us that cannot create beautiful imagery from scratch on our own we now have a creative outlet to build upon. No two pages will look the same or hold the same meaning.
Also – for those of you hiding – no one suspects a coloring book. It’s pretty. It’s just self care. You “just enjoying coloring” if anyone questions you.
So, here are are a few ideas for how to incorporate them into your own practice!

  1. Use whole pages as dedications to deities, spirits, your own divine connections.
  2. Use them in meditative practice to pour your intention out on the page with color correspondences if you can’t find the right words for what you need.
  3. Cut out planetary-based images to focus any energy you may be drawing down from a an astrological working. Pop it into your grimoire, or carry it with you in a planner or pocket to keep it with you.
  4. On hand flower petals. We’ve all seen those beautiful ceremonial flower rings on instagram. This is great if you do not have the ability to get fresh flowers but want them represented on your altar or in your working.

I’ve linked a massive color correspondence list I’ve seen floating around the tumblrsphere here.
For those of you that may need a little help narrowing things down. I pulled together a quick list of books that caught my eye in Barnes & Noble. Obviously this is not going to encompass everything, but I think it covers enough of the major areas to get you rolling.
Grayscale Landscapes
Lost Ocean
Mermaids
Enchanted Forests
Enchanted Magical Forests
Myth & Magic
Fairies & Angels
Celtic Mandalas
Flower Mandalas
Celestial Mandalas
What is your favorite “everyday” item that you love incorporating into your practice?

My Top 5 Everyday Witch Tips

Hello, Mavens!
Today is quick and as to the point as I can get!
I’m quite a fan of everyday magick. I love the moments when I realize it’s at work during the day and it always recenters me during my work day. I thought I would share my favorite ways with you!
1. I track the moon cycle and major magickal events in my everyday planner. Not only on the monthly calendar, but on the dailys. It helps me keep an eye on my energy levels and if there is potentially any reason for weird vibes I may be picking up on.  You can expand this to include any major transits or retrogrades. Now, I will say this helps even if you have a greater understanding of your natal chart and how shifts may impact you most significantly.  There are times when everyone else seems to be going crazy and I feel just fine, and it is likely because the shift occurs somewhere in my chart that is more internal than external.
2. One quick card draw each morning to focus my energy on OR to keep an eye out for. I use the latter when I’m feeling particularly on edge. Or, a weekly draw like we do now on the blog.  Daily draws can get overwhelming, especially if you are new, but they can be very helpful in identifying patterns in the long run.
3. Daily Affirmations! Now, I no longer do these, just do to some internal realizations about myself and how I need to receive information.  But, they can be a great way to pump yourself up and set your mind on a task.
4. Five minutes of meditation before bed or when you wake up – whatever works with your schedule. I know, I know. I rant and rave about meditation in literally every post it seems. But it’s so good for you, your brain, your energy!  I have even started participating in guided meditations offered on our university campus.  It helps me feel like I am taking a moment for myself during work and resets me to be able to tackle the rest of the day.
5. Charm your everyday jewelry pieces to boost you throughout the day. I have my wedding ring charmed for protection and another ring for clarity.  They’re small, but mighty!
What are your favorite ways to practice a little magick everyday!?  I’m always on the hunt for more ways to incorporate my practice.

My [Simple] Full Moon Ritual

Someone asked me today if I had a simple full moon ritual that they could use to reenergize. I’m sure I’ve mentioned this before, but for the sake of clarity – my rituals are not that intense. I’m always trying to find ways to bring more magick into my everyday routine, but I like to keep the fuss out of my practice right now. I focus on the fundamentals, on how it feels. I try not on what I think it’s supposed to look like. Every witch has her way.
Simple Full Moon Ritual
I like to use full moons as a quiet moment for myself. It’s a moment for me to lock myself away from the demands of everyday life and refocus. You can stop wherever you wish during this timeline.  This is my full evening after caring for my family and taking some time to unwind. I still manage to be in bed by 9pm.
Optional Supplies:

  • Candles
  • Incense
  • Sage Bundle for smoke cleansing
  • Pen & paper

Step 1 – Tidy up your home or your space. At least handle the major things so that your brain isn’t in overdrive thinking about everything you “need to get done”.
Step 2 – Smoke or salt cleanse your space. Open the windows and really get that fresh air and energy in.
Step 3 – Cleanse yourself. Shower, bath, whatever you prefer. Take the time to let your body relax and get into a space of calm.  I usually do a calming affirmation during my body cleanse. You can find some of my favorite affirmations here.
Step 4 – Minimum five minutes of meditation. There are some great playlists out there. I prefer to listen to soft instrumental music to help me through my meditations. Find one that you resonate with that does not pull your mind from concentrating on your breath.

Step 5 – There are options here depending on whether you are focused on manifesting or releasing. You can do both if you would like:

  1. Journal your intentions or what you would like to manifest into your life. Keep it very definitive and descriptive. Use “I am”, “This is” statements as if it is already true. Don’t give your magickal energy the chance to mess around and take forever to bring your manifestation to fruition.
  2. Focus on something that has you feeling “stuck”.  Dive into an emotion you have been feeling a lot of lately and why it has stuck with you.  How is it affecting you? I prefer to use the “stream of consciousness” method when doing this.  I try not to edit my thoughts or feelings – just let it all flow out of you. It doesn’t need to make sense or have proper grammar or spelling. Just let it out. It may get ugly and you may cry, but that is OKAY!  Allow yourself to feel it.

Step 6 – Depending on what you did in step 5, you will finalize your manifestation or release:

  1. Manifesting – Take your manifestations and fold them up. Focus on the positive energy you’ve put into them and really hold your intentions in your mind. Place your manifestations into a place that brings you happiness but that you will not disturb.  I have mine in a little glass box on my altar. I don’t touch it unless I’m adding to it or felt that I have manifested what I initially called. Light a candle and take a moment of silence to settle into that wonderful motivating feeling.
  2. Releasing – Take all of that emotional word-vomit you just laid down and rip it up. and then, light it on fire. Why do you think lighting your ex’s stuff seemed so appealing?  Let. That. Shit. Go.

And that’s it!  Once you feel you’ve really nailed down your manifestation or just taken the time to let go of whatever has its hold on you, take a moment of quiet and go to bed! Sleep is important. Let things be.
What is your full moon ritual?  Do you find yourself doing more or less than mine?

Everyday Magick: Getting Grounded

You’ve probably seen numerous pagan/witch platforms claiming that the greatest tool in a witch’s arsenal is their ability to ground.
They aren’t lying.
Mother Earth’s energy provides a stabilizing force that we can tap into to calm and pull away our erratic energies.
Being an empath, I’ve always found my energy is highly affected by those around me and situations that require a high level of emotional intelligence. I often find myself easily swayed or pulled along because I am unable to keep my feet on the ground.
While many of us, myself included, typically avoid confrontation due to the potential for negative emotions that can bubble up – learning to face and manage it is a necessity of life.

As I have grown, I’ve found it necessary to establish boundaries to protect my own energy.

Being empowered to establish those boundaries has helped me perform stronger professionally and personally.  I understand my limits and other’s motivations much clearer. Developing emotional boundaries with friends and loved ones is important to ensure you can support them in healthy ways without letting them overwhelm you.
It is difficult for me to find time during a busy work day, when I can feel myself becoming overwhelmed and flustered, to take a moment to get grounded.  I adapted some practices to fit my own needs and better integrate with my daily schedule. Because I find working out to be a calming and cleansing experience, I applied the same logic to my daily grounding practice.

Everyday Witchcraft - Getting Grounded

There are certain aspects of our day that are so routine, you could pretty much do them in your sleep. Those are the activities I save for moments when I need a break. I remain productive, but can give myself a mental break.
While I perform this task, hopefully while standing (I love my standing desk), I let my mind slowly move into an almost “tunnel vision” like space. I want my vision and the active part of my brain to be solely focused on this simple task (filing, simple payment processing, even walking to a meeting).
There is a moment when you become aware of your internal energy and can acknowledge your anxiety or worries in a way that does not cause you to panic further.
When I can feel my own erratic energy, I envision a bright rope of light extending from the base of my spine deep into the Earth. I let this light manifest however it sees fit, I do not attempt to hold onto a specific image such as a rope, or vine, etc. All that matters is that it is a constant stream of energy from you into the Earth.
As I settle into this connection, I attempt to tie the energy I release and take in with my breath. As I breathe in, I envision drawing Earth’s energy up the cord into my spine and letting it fill me. As I breathe out, I release all of the things I cannot immediately or directly control. The root of my anxiety typically comes from a space of “not knowing” or being unable to control the actions of others.
This practice allows me to center myself on what I can control and trust in my decisions.

***

I’ve found this to be an excellent way to practice entering a meditative state (in a potentially uncontrollable environment), and allowing myself to face my concerns in a calm manner.
Establishing boundaries has greatly empowered my ability to judge situations in all aspects of my life. I no longer have to focus solely on making it through day by day. I have the clarity to think ahead and advocate for myself.
How do you practice grounding? Is it part of your morning/nightly routine, or do you utilize it in ritual work?
Love & Light, mavens!
